Popular Asked Questions Regarding A Newborn Photography Session

June 23, 2020

Below I have answered a handful of questions that frequently get asked by parents before booking in for a Newborn session!

Where will the session take place?

The session will take place at my home studio. You can find images of this on my website. If you wish you can come and view the studio space before hand. I let all my clients view the studio space before a shoot as I want to make sure you are 100% comfortable with bringing a newborn baby into the environment.

What is your style? Do you create posed or natural portraits?

You can see my style of work looking through my online portfolio. I like to keep everything really simple to focus on the main subject. The last thing you want is too much distraction from your baby. I use props and accessories to add to the image but I try to stick to only 2/3 accessories per image. The majority of my work in the studio is posed but I do offer more lifestyle images for those that want photographs taken in their own home.

Do you have insurance and training in newborn photography?

Yes, I am fully insured with Simply Business Insurance. I have a 1st class BA Honours Degree in photography and complete regular online courses to stay up to date with the latest newborn poses and trends. I also have first aid training revolving around newborn and babies.

Do I need to meet with you before my baby arrives?

You do not need to meet with me before hand, but I do suggest a phone call. This way we can discuss what type of image’s you’d like, the colours schemes, props ect. It’s better to be prepared and have something in mind.

How long will a newborn session last?

A newborn session typically last approximately 3 hours.

What if my baby won’t settle or sleep for the shoot?

It is very unlikely in the time frame that your baby won’t settle for some photographs. I suggest you feed them on arrival if possible and bring an extra bottle with you in case they need a top up during a session. A handy tip is to dress your baby in clothing that is easy to take off without disturbing them, nothing that we will need to pull off over their head.

If your baby is very unsettled I will try to sooth them by wrapping them, a pose I will tend to start off with if this is the case. If we have tried absolutely everything and your baby is simply having none of if it then we will reschedule the shoot.

When should I book a session?

I recommend booking a session anytime after your 20-week scan. We will arrange a date based around the due date. I then ask that you get in touch again as soon as he/she is born. Newborn photographs should be shot within 5-12 days of them being born to get the best results. Of course we can capture your newborn older than this to capture more awake images.

Do you require a deposit? How do I pay?

I require a £25 deposit when you book to secure your session.  You can pay this via online banking or in cash. You will get a receipt of proof.

Can we have some photographs with our newborn and his/her siblings?

Of course!! I encourage you have a few shots as a family as it’s a precious moment to keep.

Do you offer wardrobe options?

Yes! I have a variety of outfits to accessorise the images. However I do like capturing them in minimal outfits to show off their tininess.

What should I bring to the session?

I will have all the necessary equipment to make the perfect pictures. I also provide wipes, nappies and a changing mat/table. I have a Tommee Tippee bottle machine at hand too. The only thing I tend to suggest bringing is anything in the photograph that is sentimental to you. It may be a blanket that has his/her name on or it could be a family heirloom. Bring along any particular prop or outfit of your babies that you would love to see in an image.

Babies also tend to be messy so if you are being photographed with your newborn it could be an idea to have a change of clothes/top.

My newborn has a patch of dry skin and spots on their face, can you edit this out?

Absolutely, I can retouch your images as you wish, I don’t like to edit the skin too much as I don’t want your baby looking like a doll, but I always get rid of any blemishes.

How long will it take to see my final images?

The turn around time is 1-2 week for the digital images.

Do you offer prints and wall art?

All my packages come with the digital files, as extra’s you can add on prints/wall art. I have a separate price list for this that I will give to you. You can see examples of my prints/albums during the meeting or in the session if we have time.
